Our Oncology Nurse Practitioners and
Physician Assistants have advanced education and national certification
to practice in an expanded role. They work in collaboration with our
physicians to provide the following health care services:
Diagnosis and management of oncology/hematology
related conditions
Physical examinations
Order and interpret diagnostic tests
Write prescriptions
Management of symptoms related to chemotherapy and other cancer
treatments
Our nurse practitioners specialize in
providing counseling, education, emotional support, and referrals
to community resources. In addition, some of our nurse practioners
and physician assistants have training in genetic counseling for certain
cancer-susceptibility genes and can advise patients interested in
possible testing for these genes.
Beth Strand has been a part of New England
Hematology/Oncology for four years. Sabrina
Baloun joined us in March 2006. Our newest nurse practitioner is Erin Maki who joined us in April 2008.
Both Erin and Sabrina have been trained in genetic counseling for familial cancer syndromes. Appointments can be made with them for genetic counseling for breast/ovarian cancer susceptiblity gene testing (BRCA1/2), hereditary colon cancer syndrome gene testing (HNPCC or FAP) and familial melanoma gene testing.
