Our Oncology Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants have advanced education and national certification to practice in an expanded role. They work in collaboration with our physicians to provide the following health care services:

Diagnosis and management of oncology/hematology related conditions
Physical examinations
Order and interpret diagnostic tests
Write prescriptions
Management of symptoms related to chemotherapy and other cancer treatments

Our nurse practitioners specialize in providing counseling, education, emotional support, and referrals to community resources. In addition, some of our nurse practioners and physician assistants have training in genetic counseling for certain cancer-susceptibility genes and can advise patients interested in possible testing for these genes.

Beth Strand has been a part of New England Hematology/Oncology for four years. Sabrina Baloun joined us in March 2006. Our newest nurse practitioner is Erin Maki who joined us in April 2008.

Both Erin and Sabrina have been trained in genetic counseling for familial cancer syndromes. Appointments can be made with them for genetic counseling for breast/ovarian cancer susceptiblity gene testing (BRCA1/2), hereditary colon cancer syndrome gene testing (HNPCC or FAP) and familial melanoma gene testing.
