NEHO is more than just a clinic.
We treat people, not just the diseases.
Our team, working in collaboration with the Vernon Cancer Center at Newton-Wellesley Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital Department of Radiation Oncology, provides personalized care in a private and comfortable setting for cancers such as breast, prostate, lung, colorectal and gynecological malignancies. In addition, benign and malignant blood disorders such as anemia, coagulation disorders, lymphoma, myeloma and leukemia are also treated.
The Vernon Cancer Center at Newton-Wellesley Hospital provides personalized cancer care in a private and comfortable setting.
The Joan & James Vernon Cancer Center at Newton-Wellesley Hospital opened in September 2009 and provides comprehensive compassionate cancer care - all in a convenient community setting.
In addition to expert medical oncology and radiation oncology services, the hospital offers a wide variety of Integrative Support Services that benefit our cancer patients and their families. These services help reduce symptoms, improve quality of life, and boost patients’ ability to cope with the anxiety and stress of a cancer diagnosis and treatment plan. Services include:
- Patient Navigator
- Genetic programs
- Nutritional support before, during, and after treatment
- Social work services
- PACT (Parenting At a Challenging Time) – for parents diagnosed with cancer
- Therapeutic mind–body programs to achieve optimal healing
- Pain management and Palliative Care services
- Educational and support workshops
In addition, cancer patients at the Vernon Cancer Center at Newton-Wellesley Hospital have access to a wide variety of clinical trials including research conducted in collaboration with the Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham & Women’s Hospital, and Dana-Farber Partners Cancer Care.
Through an anonymous donation, the Center recognizes and honors Joan and James Vernon of Weston, Massachusetts. Joan, a nurse and caregiver to many friends and community members, passed away in 2005 from cancer. Her husband, James Vernon, MD, Surgeon at Newton-Wellesley Hospital for nearly four decades, helped design and guide the Center.
The Department of Radiation Oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital combines clinical expertise, compassionate care and advanced radiation therapies to deliver the safest, most effective treatments for cancer and benign tumors. Our staff physicians include some of the world’s most knowledgeable and skilled radiation oncologists.
NEHO is a QOPI (Quality Oncology Practice Initiative) Certified Program. This American Society of Clinical Oncology program was started in 2010 and recognizes oncology practices that demonstrate exceedingly high levels of oncology care. As of April 2011, there are only 65 QOPI certified programs in the United States and only 4 certified programs in Massachusetts. NEHO is very proud to be recognized nationally as a program with a commitment to excellence and ongoing quality improvement. Further information about the QOPI Certification Program and a list of certified programs can be found on the QOPI website.
In addition, NEHO is one of the founding members of Cancer Clinics of Excellence (CCE). CCE is a national network of practice-owned, physician-driven community-based oncology practices working together to develop, influence, measure, and support evidence-based, best-practice cancer care to patients in their own community. Our physicians at NEHO have played a key role in developing the CCE guidelines that provide physicians with a complete, up to date, evidence based treatment protocol for quality patient care. More information about CCE can be found on their website.
